 Girls' Cross Country Results 9/27

Track and Field NewsPlenty in reserve for Pride
Depth helps MV girls to first place

From The Concord Monitor

The Merrimack Valley girls' cross country got just what it needed yesterday. And then some.

Competing without its Nos. 2 and 3 runners from the preseason, and with its No. 5 runner nursing an injury, the Pride had to look elsewhere for performances, and it found plenty. MV placed five girls in the top six to dominate the three-team event in Penacook. The Valley finished with 17 points, Portsmouth had 40 and Pembroke Academy finished with 71.

"It was phenomenal to see the depth come up," MV Coach Dave Irving said. "We've never really had depth before, but we do now, and we need it. So it's nice to see it paying off."

Of course having a runner like Katie Chwasciak leading the way makes it easier for the depth to rise. Chwasciak finished first in a time of 20 minutes and 36 seconds, 1:30 ahead of the field. After that it was TimiAnne Dent (second, 21:36), Lindsay Friberg (third, 21:47), Rea Baxmann (fifth, 22:36) and Diane Rumrill (sixth, 22:41).

That quintet set a school record for average top-five time on the MV course by posting an 21:45 average, besting the previous mark of 21:56. Friberg ran a personal best as did Rumrill, a sophomore, who ran nearly a minute faster than she ever had.

Irving said he expects his No. 2 runner, Bridget Tevnan (possible stress fracture), and his No. 3, Bethany Moller (Achilles injury), to return before the season ends. The No. 5, Charlotte Evanoski, has been plagued by a hip injury throughout the season. Yesterday she finished ninth in 24:09.
Senior Lindsey Fitzgerald paced the Spartan pack as she finished in 12th place in 24:34. Right behind her were Jess Daigle (13th, 24:56), Lindsay Jones (24:57) and Josie Colbert (15th, 25:01). Carlotta Civera didn't finish too far away from the rest of the group as she finished 17th in 26:01.
